Serve Denton (founded in 2012) provides affordable office space significantly below market rate to nonprofits so more of their funds can go toward their mission instead of overhead costs. When nonprofits office together, this makes it easier for those in need to find services in one centralized location.
Serve Denton supports nonprofits that open doors for people to become self-sufficient.
We provide affordable office space for nonprofits so more of their funds can go toward their mission as opposed to overhead costs. – We provide affordable meeting space (classroom and conference room) for local nonprofits and businesses. – We helped jumpstart the Denton Mobile Pantry, which is a monthly food pantry where community members can collect fresh produce and shelf-stable items for free, no questions asked. This pantry took place in our parking lot for over two years. – We spearheaded a project called, “Little Free Pantry,” where community members could apply to receive a small wooden pantry to put in their yard and commit to filling it up every week so those in need could have accessible food.
The biggest challenge our organization had to face (at least within the last year) has been relocating almost 10 nonprofits from our old leased facility to a new facility. There were a million moving pieces and decisions that had to be made very quickly. Now we are moved into our new property and are so grateful that we have been able to do this expansion.
I would say my biggest accomplishment to date within Serve Denton would be the partnerships that have been formed with the nonprofit agencies for this new campus. Our 32,000 sf facility is almost completely leased out and new facilities are already being planned to be built on site. I get to work with the most amazing people!
Every fourth Saturday of the months, we have a service day at The Wheeler House, which is one of our programs. This is a transitional housing facility for moms and their kids managed by Giving Hope, Inc. Volunteers help with backyard activities such as landscaping as well as indoor activities such as painting and preparing rooms for new moms to move in. You can sign up to serve on our website.
On Thursday, June 14, from 5:30-7:30 pm, we are having our Celebrity Waiter Night at BoneDaddy’s BBQ Denton where our board members are your waiters for the night. 10% of your meal plus all tips benefits Serve Denton!
One of my favorite parts of what I do is getting to hear the stories from our partner agencies about the clients they’re serving and programs they’re operating. Every time I talk with them, they have some exciting thing to share about how they’re helping those in need. It gives me the motivation I need to know that Serve Denton is playing a vital role in helping these agencies increase their capacity and serve more people.
We love being able to partner with so many amazing nonprofit agencies, and we look forward to increasing the number of agencies on our campus to better serve our neighbors in need in Denton County. The idea of a one-stop-shop for social services started back in the 1970s by Denton Mayor Elinor Hughes, and we are honored to continue her legacy!
